For the case of W, which is a complex function of two spatial variables, “phase” refers to something different from (but reducible to) the “phase” of a mono-energetic scalar wave (which is a function of one, rather than two, spatial variables). In the context of second-order coherence theory for statistically stationary quasi-monochromatic complex scalar fields, the statistics of the partially coherent disturbance can be described by two-point correlation functions such as the cross-spectral density W. However, all realistic sources are partially coherent. Such a field, which is perfectly spatially and temporally coherent, has wavefronts corresponding to surfaces of constant phase. For a mono-energetic complex scalar wave, the situation is clear: the “phase” is equal to the argument (“arg”) of the complex function describing the field. It may surprise you that there is some confusion as to the meaning of the term “phase”, in the context of propagation-based phase retrieval. Propagation-based phase retrieval, namely the recovery of the phase of a forward propagating (and typically paraxial) optical field from intensity measurements over one or more planes perpendicular to the optic axis, is of importance for a variety of radiation and matter wavefields. Note: Author names will be searched in the keywords field, also, but that may find papers where the person is mentioned, rather than papers they authored.Use a comma to separate multiple people: J Smith, RL Jones, Macarthur.Use these formats for best results: Smith or J Smith. For best results, use the separate Authors field to search for author names. Use quotation marks " " around specific phrases where you want the entire phrase only.Question mark (?) - Example: "gr?y" retrieves documents containing "grey" or "gray".Asterisk ( * ) - Example: "elect*" retrieves documents containing "electron," "electronic," and "electricity".Improve efficiency in your search by using wildcards.Example: (photons AND downconversion) - pump.Example: (diode OR solid-state) AND laser.Note the Boolean sign must be in upper-case. Separate search groups with parentheses and Booleans.Keep it simple - don't use too many different parameters.
